Chris Sutton says he’s ‘really annoyed’ by something Arne Slot has now said at Liverpool

Arne Slot has had an incredible start to life at Liverpool.

Slot has Liverpool sitting pretty towards the top of the Premier League table, and a draw against Arsenal at the weekend further proved the Merseyside club’s title credentials.

Slot has impressed almost everyone with his tactical nous, while his demeanour in the media has also been impressive.

Indeed, Slot has been praised for how he handles the media, and he’s barely put a foot wrong in any of his interviews so far.

However, speaking on BBC 606, Chris Sutton has found a bone to pick with the Liverpool manager.

Chris Sutton annoyed by Arne Slot comments

Sutton says that he’s annoyed by Slot’s recent comments about playing in Europe and how his players have been affected by the schedule.

“And that’s why this league is also so tough, especially if you have to play in Europe in the Champions League during the week as well. So that combination makes it a hard league to get your wins. But the good thing is if you work at a top club, similar to Holland, that you have quality players, which makes it also easier to get your results,” Slot said.

Sutton suggested that professional footballers have no right to moan about this situation, claiming that their first-class travel gives them adequate time to rest and recuperate between these European matches.

“He’s done a brilliant job taking over from Klopp and they’re pushing at the top. Do you know what? I get really annoyed about that,” Sutton said.

“One thing which really gets my back up, manager’s moaning about playing in Europe. So, you know, he said that one day less their recovery after playing away in Europe. They travel first class, you know.

They’re not on Ryanair or EasyJet. You know, it’s first-class travel.”

Jurgen Klopp had the same complaints

Sutton says that he’s annoyed by Slot’s comments about playing in Europe, but perhaps he should have some more compassion.

These managers know their players better than anyone else, and if they say the schedule is having an impact, they’re probably right.

Jurgen Klopp used to have similar complaints at Liverpool, and Klopp was often called out for his views too.

The reality is that the footballing schedule is gruelling, and while getting comfortable flights is helpful, having to travel across Europe twice in a week certainly isn’t the sort of preparation you want heading into a game against a team like Arsenal.

Unfortunately for Slot, this sort of thing is part and parcel of being a Premier League team these days, and his complaints are going to fall upon deaf ears as UEFA and FIFA continue to only expand the schedule for these elite clubs.
