Chris Sutton has told BT Sport (broadcast on 12/3; 21:53) that Steven Gerrard made an error picking Alfredo Morelos over Florian Kamberi for Rangers’s defeat on Thursday, with the pundit praising the January signing’s cameo.
The Gers have it all to do in the second-leg of their last 16 tie. Bayer Leverkusen left Ibrox with a 3-1 victory after a ruthless display in front of goal.
The Bundesliga side had dominated the first 53 minutes of the contest and were 1-0 up when Gerrard called for Kamberi to come on.
And the change threatened to be inspired. Kamberi was pivotal in driving the home side up the pitch. He started a move that led to a chance for Morelos, and he almost presented a golden opportunity for his teammate after winning the ball back on the edge of the box.
The 25-year-old was superb after coming on, receiving the plaudits from the supporters. And Sutton suggested that he proved that he should have started the game.
“Kamberi did in 40 minutes more than what Morelos gave in the whole 90,” he told BT Sport. “He hasn’t turned up after the winter break. We spoke about it being a gamble to start [Morelos]. Steven Gerrard had a choice before the game, and got that one wrong.”
Morelos has scored one goal since the season’s resumption in January. And with Kamberi impressing once again, Gerrard will surely be asking himself whether he needs to make a change before Sunday’s clash with Celtic.
There will surely be plenty of fans imploring the Rangers boss to turn to Kamberi.
After Thursday night, Gerrard will arguably be taking a huge risk should he keep faith with Morelos.
