Chelsea's Hakim Ziyech slammed for 'horror cameo' in CL last night, just days after Tottenham wanted to sign him
Tottenham Hotspur reportedly wanted to sign Hakim Ziyech from Chelsea on transfer deadline day last week, but after watching the Moroccan in the Champions League yesterday, Spurs fans won’t be too upset about missing out on him.
Journalist Simon Phillips revealed on deadline day that Spurs entered talks with the Blues to sign the 29-year-old. It was even claimed that there was a definite chance for the move to go through, but it didn’t in the end.
Chelsea’s Hakim Ziyech slammed for ‘horror cameo’ in CL last night
Chelsea took on Croatian giants Dinamo Zagreb in the Champions League yesterday, and the Blues were really poor.
They suffered a 1-0 defeat in Stadion Maksimir thanks to a goal from Mislav Orsic – a name Spurs fans know all too well after what he did against them in March 2021.
Although almost every Chelsea player was poor last night, it was Ziyech who came under the most criticism. The Moroccan came on as a substitute and Sky Sports described his display as a ‘horror cameo’.
Other publications weren’t too kind to Ziyech either.
Football London rated him 3/10 and wrote: “Introduced at the interval to add a creative spark, Ziyech was poor with his crossing, wasteful with his shooting, and hit the wall with two promising free-kicks late on.
ESPN also rated him 3/10. They said: “Replaced Azpilicueta at halftime and showed early intent with a shot from range, even if it didn’t trouble Livakovic. Was largely ineffective, hitting some horrible shots and crosses, but almost found Broja with a cross into a dangerous area. Smashed an effort straight at Livakovic from close range. His night was encapsulated by him catching the ball before it had gone out of play.”
90min agreed with the above two and wrote: “Saw a lot of possession but did very little with it. Was a detriment to Chelsea in the closing stages, handling the ball and providing two awful free-kicks.”
Ziyech was heavily linked with a move away from Chelsea this summer, and Tottenham were the surprise club rumoured to be interested in signing him.
The Moroccan is a fine talent. His performances for Ajax before he joined Chelsea were absolutely incredible, but things have just not worked out for him at Stamford Bridge.
In 86 games for the Blues, Ziyech has scored just 14 goals. He is not the first choice under Thomas Tuchel, and it is very likely that he will move on in January after missing out on a move this summer.
Some Tottenham fans were excited about the prospect of signing Ziyech when the links first emerged this summer, but after watching his performance last night, many will breathe a sigh of relief.
