Tottenham Hotspur completed one of the biggest transfers of the summer by signing Richarlison, but Spurs’ fierce London rivals, Chelsea, apparently tried to hijack that deal.

That’s according to Fabrizio Romano, who revealed yesterday that right after Antonio Conte’s side agreed a deal with Everton, the Blues made an offer of their own to sign the Brazil international.

Tottenham agreed a deal worth £60 million with Everton to sign Richarlison in July (Sky Sports). The Brazilian was a wanted man this summer, but Conte and co managed to win the race to sign him.

Things, however, could’ve been very different if Chelsea were active just a couple of days before Spurs sealed the deal.

Romano revealed yesterday that the Blues decided they wanted to sign Richarlison only after Spurs had agreed a deal to sign him. The Brazilian received Chelsea’s offer a day before his medical, and Thomas Tuchel’s side even had Thiago Silva message him to see if there was a chance to hijack the deal.

Sadly for the Blues, it was just too late.

Romano said on episode 120 of the Here We Go Podcast: “The night before Richarlison had his medical in Brazil to join Tottenham and then sign his contract as new Tottenham players, Chelsea submitted a bid to Everton.

“It was an important bid also including potentially some players, but Everton said no because they already had an agreement with Tottenham for a higher bid.

“Also, I can reveal to you that Thiago Silva was trying to send some messages to Richarlison to understand how advanced the deal with Tottenham was and if he had some chance to sign for Chelsea, but it was too late.

“But Chelsea really wanted to hijack the Richarlison deal.”

TBR View:

Both Tottenham and Chelsea were heavily linked with a move to sign Richarlison this summer, but it was Spurs who stepped up and got the job done in the end.

Richarlison, branded as a ‘superb’ player, has been a very good signing for Spurs. The Brazilian is yet to score a goal for Conte’s side, but he’s already a fan favourite. There’s every chance he’ll go on to become a fine player for the North London club.

However, we do wonder what would’ve happened if Chelsea had made their move a few days earlier.

Spurs fans will not care now and neither will Richarlison, who is hoping to get the nod to start against Marseille in the Champions League tonight.
