Chelsea now frontrunners to sign 'phenomenal' Newcastle transfer target

Chelsea are now the frontrunners to sign Newcastle United target Marcus Thuram, with Italian journalist Gianluca Di Marzio reporting that the Blues have made him an offer.

Eddie Howe will be aiming to strengthen his side this month as he bids to keep Newcastle in the running for a top-four finish.

The Magpies have been performing way above expectations this season and that is largely down to the exceptional job Howe is doing.

But the club have also been astute in terms of their business in the market, with several signings making a huge impact in the first-team.

One player Newcastle have seemingly had their eye on is Borussia Monchengladbach’s Thuram – who is out of contract at the end of the season.

Just last month, 90 Min reported that the Magpies were the Premier League club who were showing the strongest interest in the French striker.

Now, Chelsea have accelerated their interest in Thuram and are seemingly leading the race to sign him.

Chelsea more likely to sign Thuram

Di Marzio claims that Thuram is now in advanced talks over a move to Stamford Bridge, with his contract set to expire in the summer.

Other London-based clubs have also expressed an interest in the 25-year-old but the Blues are now the frontrunners to snap him up.

The striker has apparently had a change of heart over the last 24 hours as he was keen to see out the season in Germany. But Graham Potter’s side have submitted a ‘tempting offer’ and he is seemingly edging towards a move to west London.

Thuram has been in lethal goal scoring form in the Bundesliga this season having netted 10 times in 15 appearances.

He also impressed at the World Cup with France as he made an impact in the final off the bench against Argentina.

The Frenchman has been described as a ‘phenomenal’ talent and he is also a versatile player who can operate across the front-three.

He would have been a huge coup for Newcastle and could have provided quality depth up-front. But Howe certainly isn’t short of attacking options and the Magpies will undoubtedly have alternative targets to turn to if Thuram completes a switch to west London.
