Chelsea must beat Liverpool to want-away star’s signing after Enzo Maresca’s comments

Chelsea have had a busy summer in the transfer market, with the West London club adding a handful of new players to their squad.

The Blues are expected to be in the running for a top-four finish in 2025-26, especially after Chelsea signed Joao Pedro, Liam Delap and Jamie Gittens, among others.

However, despite the Stamford Bridge outfit strengthening in attacking areas, Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca has a headache at the back due to a string of injuries.

‘We need a central defender’

Chelsea have a number of central defenders unavailable ahead of their Premier League opener this weekend, with Levi Colwill rupturing his ACL in the latest blow to the London club.

The England international joins the likes of Wesley Fofana and Benoit Badiashile on the injury list, with the Blues short of options at centre-half ahead of the clash with Crystal Palace on Sunday.

Maresca has stated he wants Chelsea to sign a new central defender, despite the club hoping he can find ‘an internal option’.

“You know how important Levi has been for us last season, for the way we want to play,” Maresca said, according to the club’s official website.

“We said many times that we are able to create chances and to attack in the right way, if we are able to build in the right way. Levi was a huge part of our build-up and now he is out.

“We are trying to find a solution internally, but the club knows exactly what I think and we will see what happens.

“I think we need a central defender.”

Maresca has opted for the likes of Trevor Chalobah and Josh Acheampong in central defence during pre-season, with it being unclear whether summer signing Jorrel Hato will feature at centre-half or left-back this season.

Liverpool target Guehi a perfect option

Should Maresca get his way and convince the Chelsea hierarchy to splash more cash on a new defender, there is a clear option available across London.

Liverpool want to sign Marc Guehi, who has entered the last 12 months of his Crystal Palace contract and would be an ideal addition for Chelsea.

The Blues would be getting a proven Premier League player and one who clearly sees his future away from Selhurst Park.

Chelsea should switch their attention to Guehi to solve their issues in central defence, with the England international having all the attributes to be a key player at Stamford Bridge.
