Chelsea have now completed the £60m signing of Joao Pedro from Brighton.
The Brazil international has signed a seven-year contract with the Blues after scoring 30 goals in 70 appearances for the Seagulls.
Newcastle also wanted Pedro – who was dropped by Fabian Hurzeler for the final two Premier League outings of last season following a clash with Jan Paul van Hecke.
The South American scored ten goals and provided six assists in 27 Premier League appearances before that incident occurred.
After Chelsea announced the signing of Joao Pedro, Brighton fans flocked to X (previously known as Twitter) to warn the Stamford Bridge faithful.
Chelsea fans told Joao Pedro has an attitude “problem” he must improve
The Brazilian is undoubtedly a talented footballer, but it sounds like he may well have a bit of an ego.
One Brighton fan wrote that Pedro has a “massive attitude problem” after Chelsea announced his arrival, adding that they hope there is a “good anger management” course at Stamford Bridge.
We can’t say much about what the 23-year-old is like as a person ourselves, but there have been several questionable incidents aside from the clash with Van Hecke, including a quite brutal swing of the elbow towards Brentford No.18 Yehor Yarmolyuk, which could have been very serious had he connected.
Another Brighton fan added: “Attitude man gone plus £60m. But thanks for the memories Joao.”
The Chelsea new boy’s crowning moment at the Amex Stadium arguably came when he fired Brighton to a 1-0 win over Marseille in the UEFA Europa League with a fantastic strike in the 88th minute, which ensured the Seagulls topped Group B and went straight into the Round of 16.
Another quite brutally wrote: “We won’t miss Pedro. Decent player, but not THAT good. Clearly had flaws in his attitude and didn’t want to stay anyway. Jog on, you’re replaceable.”
What Fabian Hurzeler said about Joao Pedro and Jan Paul van Hecke incident
Enzo Maresca will hope to avoid a similar incident to what happened at the end of last season – described as a “massive fallout” at Brighton – or this £60m deal could quite quickly look to be a waste of resources.
Discussing the matter, Hurzeler told reporters: “With Joao we had a small issue in training… Joao is an incredible football player, he’s a match winner for us, he’s a great player and that’s why we invested in him, but there are principles that are non-negotiable and count for everyone, that everyone has to stick to, where we don’t make any compromises.
“Joao is still a young player. He will grow and I’m sure he will learn from this and come back stronger next season. I’m really looking forward to seeing him renewed and reinvigorated at his highest peak.”
Hopefully, Chelsea can help Pedro put these accusations over his attitude behind him.
