Report: Newcastle hopes of signing 'fantastic' £27m midfielder before Thursday all but over as club digs heels

Newcastle won’t be signing Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher as things stand, with The Athletic claiming the Englishman is set to stay put.

Gallagher has attracted a whole host of attention this summer with the likes of Newcastle, Everton, and West Ham all said to be among the clubs who have expressed an interest in signing him. Gallagher has been playing for Chelsea though, albeit he was shown red this weekend.

And according to The Athletic, Gallagher’s future will lie at Stamford Bridge for now, with the Blues set to keep the midfielder barring any sort of offer they deem way too good to turn down. Of course, figures of around the £40m mark have been mentioned, so Newcastle would need to come in with a hefty offer to do business.

Newcastle have recently splashed out on signing Alexander Isak as well so any big move before the deadline on Thursday would seem unlikely now. However, few expected the Toon to spend what they did on Isak, so there is always a chance they go again.

Gallagher is also interesting Crystal Palace. After spending last season there on loan, it’s been reported today that the Eagles have lodged a £27m bid for the midfielder.

TBR’s View: Gallagher Would Complete Newcastle For Now

Despite his difficult start for Chelsea and the disappointing red card this weekend, Conor Gallagher is still a very talented Premier League midfielder. He’d be great for Newcastle and be another excellent building block for Eddie Howe to mould his team around.

Chelsea know they have a top player on their hands so it’s of little surprise to see them digging their heels here a bit.

Of course, Newcastle have the money if they did want to sign Gallagher. But with Isak in the building, it would take a monumental effort as of now to land the England man.
