Chelsea welcomed Jose Mourinho back to Stamford Bridge for their latest Champions League fixture against Benfica, and he quickly reminded fans why he’s the Special One.

Mourinho has a special bond with Chelsea supporters based on his two stints in charge of the club, which saw him win multiple titles, including three Premier Leagues.

However, he was in the away dugout this evening, but the current Chelsea boss came out on top with a 1-0 win to earn their first three points after a first-half own goal from Richard Rios.

Mourinho was welcomed back to Stamford Bridge with a warm reception, as his name was sung throughout the game, but one particular moment saw people’s respect for him grow even further.

Jose Mourinho praised for stopping Benfica fans throwing items at Enzo Fernandez

During the first half, Enzo Fernandez took a corner in front of the Benfica fans, and he took the time to applaud the supporters of his former club.

However, the away following didn’t have a mutual feeling of respect as they opted to jeer the Chelsea midfielder before throwing various items at him as he attempted to take the set piece.

The game was stopped until fans calmed down, and Mourinho got involved by going down the touchline to urge them to quit throwing items at Fernandez, in a moment that Chelsea fans loved.

Even though Mourinho was likely just looking to get the game restarted as quickly as possible, Chelsea fans took it as a token of respect from their former manager.

One fan summed it up by saying, “Once a blue, forever a blue,” meanwhile another simply said the act was, “class.”

Mourinho has never been known to shy away from the drama throughout his career, and one person joked about that.

They said, “I hate the term ‘aura’ in 9/10 situations, but blimey his aura this week.”

Another supporter stated that it was “respect from the Special One,” which was evidently a popular decision among the Chelsea faithful.

Enzo Maresca eased the pressure on himself with the result

While it was a big moment for Chelsea fans to see Mourinho back at Stamford Bridge due to his history, the focus was also on the current boss.

Enzo Maresca has been put under pressure in recent days following three consecutive losses, which made this result one that he desperately needed on a personal level.

He managed to deal with the attention being on the opposite dugout in this game to guide his team to an important win, despite injuries to Cole Palmer and other key players such as Liam Delap.

Chelsea will now move on to face Liverpool, the current Premier League leaders, this weekend in the final game before the upcoming international break.
