Celtic fans react as £16m attacker shines down south on Wednesday night

Mo Elyounoussi scored a sensational hat-trick as Southampton cruised past Newport in the Carabao Cup – and Celtic fans have reacted on Twitter.

Southampton are renowned for being beaten by huge scorelines in recent years. Leicester and Manchester United scored nine in 2019 and 2021.

But the Saints produced a big one of their own on Wednesday night, against a side in Newport that have become renowned for producing giant killings.

The Saints won 8-0 away from home, a brilliant result even despite the difference in clubs. Elyounoussi was on fire, having returned from Celtic.

The Norway international has spent the last two seasons at Celtic, with the bond between Southampton and the Scottish side remaining strong.

What are Celtic fans saying as Elyounoussi shines for Southampton in 8-0 Cup win?

The likes of Victor Wanyama, Fraser Forster, Virgil van Dijk, Stuart Armstrong and Elyounoussi have all swapped Celtic for Southampton.

Elyounoussi scored 24 goals in 67 appearances for the Hoops – laying on 14 assists. His form has seemingly earned him a second Saints chance.

He took it with some aplomb on Wednesday night. The £16million Saints signing (Mail) found the back of the net three times for Southampton.

Elyounoussi also notched two assists, taking his tally to five goal involvements in one match. Plenty to ponder for Ralph Hasenhuttl.

Celtic fans caught wind of Elyounoussi’s incredible performance against Newport and many applauded the ex-Basel and Molde star.

In other Celtic news, the Hoops have suffered a transfer blow as Hibernian open talks over a new deal with one of their star players.
