‘Carrying the team’: David Moyes says 23-year-old West Ham man was the best player on the pitch yesterday

West Ham United will spend the World Cup break looking over their shoulder after another poor result yesterday.

The Hammers fell to a 2-0 home defeat to Leicester City that saw their opponents leapfrog them in the table.

David Moyes spoke to the press after the match, via Football London, and reflected on his team’s performance.

They couldn’t have started the game in worse fashion, going behind inside ten minutes.

Fresh from his call-up to the England squad, James Maddison opened the scoring after being left unmarked at the back post.

Lukasz Fabianski was called upon on a number of occasions throughout the match and kept the score line down.

He even saved a penalty from Youri Tielemans, but couldn’t do anything about Harvey Barnes’ late goal.

It’s a result that leaves the Hammers just a point above the relegation zone with a month to reflect on their recent poor performances.

However, Moyes singled out captain Declan Rice for praise after the game, and was seriously impressed with the 23-year-old.

Moyes seriously impressed with Rice’s performance

After the match, Moyes was asked how he thought the midfielder did against Leicester.

“Boy, oh boy he played well today, didn’t he?” Moyes said.

“He was terrific. The best player on the pitch, once again, by a mile.

“He’s a terrific player and he’s at many times carrying the team because he’s such a good player and we need everybody to get up to the levels.

“I think we made quite a lot of opportunities from balls into the box but we weren’t able to finish them off and that’s been a bit the story of our season so far.”

Rice will now have to put his club’s recent results to the back of his mind.

He’s sure to play a key part of Gareth Southgate’s England team at the World Cup.

Tony Cascarino has described him as a ‘complete player’, and is ready-made to play in the Champions League.

He certainly won’t be reaching Europe’s top competitions with the Hammers any time soon.

Ray Parlour has described him as the best player currently not playing for a top six side.

Moyes was certainly very impressed with Rice yesterday and would likely agree with that conclusion.

He will be praying that he comes back from Qatar unscathed, otherwise West Ham will be losing arguably their best player.
