Jamie Carragher has told Optus Sport that Liverpool would be mad to let Mohamed Salah leave Anfield at the end of his contract, but he added that the forward would also be mad to go.
Salah’s future is going to be a huge talking point over the coming months. His deal on Merseyside expires at the end of next season. And in truth, he has been almost as impressive as he has ever been for Jurgen Klopp’s side this term.

He has scored 27 goals in 32 games in all competitions, including 19 in the Premier League. Unsurprisingly, he tops the scoring charts in the top-flight – and by some distance.
But he is also now joint-top for assists in the league. And with that, it appears to be absolutely imperative that Liverpool agree a new contract with Salah.

Fabrizio Romano has previously suggested that a new contract is not close. Obviously, that would be a huge blow for Liverpool if Salah moved on either this summer or next year.
But interestingly, Carragher has suggested that a parting of the ways may be just as harmful for Salah as it would be for Liverpool.
“Every club would love to have Mo Salah but taking someone at the age of 32 and giving them a massive contract when a lot of these teams have maybe got Mbappe, got Haaland and you’ve got the younger generation coming through, I think it would be mad for Liverpool to let him go,” he told Optus Sport.
“But I think it would be mad for Mo Salah to leave Liverpool because I think this club and Jurgen Klopp has been great for him as well.”
Liverpool are in strong position amid Mo Salah uncertainty
Liverpool are arguably in as strong a position as a club could possibly be when faced with the prospect of losing one of the world’s greatest players.
Obviously, Liverpool do not have to sell Salah this summer whatever happens.
There may be clubs Salah still hopes to play for. However, there cannot be many. And he is relying on that handful of sides coming forward with an offer.
Liverpool have also started to put together their new forward line with the likes of Diogo Jota and Luis Diaz. Those players have already proved that they are unbelievable talents.
So the Reds can afford to have slightly less fear about losing Salah.
And when you look at how Gini Wijnaldum has struggled since leaving for PSG on a free transfer, Salah surely has to be wary of making the wrong move next.
Obviously, they are very different players. But Wijnaldum’s problems highlight how important it is to get the next switch right if they are going to move on.
