‘Cannot be right’: Jamie Carragher can’t believe £29m Liverpool player is still first choice under Jurgen Klopp

Jamie Carragher has been critical of Liverpool in his column for The Telegraph after their 4-1 defeat against Napoli.

Carragher was very concerned about the energy in the Liverpool side.

He also picked out two players specifically who he didn’t think were cut out to start big matches anymore.

One of those players was 36-year-old James Milner, who struggled in midfield amid Liverpool’s ongoing injury crisis.

The other player Carragher highlighted was Roberto Firmino who he believes shouldn’t be first choice at Liverpool anymore.

The £29m signing from Hoffenheim has written himself into Liverpool’s history as part of an incredible attacking trio.

Firmino alongside Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane were unplayable at times.

However, Firmino has slowly declined over the past several seasons, and managed less than ten goal contributions last season.

Klopp loved playing Firmino as a false nine, but with Salah and Luis Diaz either side of him, the role is less impactful.

Diogo Jota and Darwin Nunez both offer something different to Firmino but Klopp persisted with the Brazilian.

Carragher: Firmino shouldn’t be first choice

In his Telegraph column, Carragher said: “When I see James Milner and Roberto Firmino starting big games for Liverpool in the Premier League or Europe, it is symptomatic of the problem.

“Likewise, Firmino is in the last year of his deal for a reason.

“He has been an amazing player for Liverpool, sure to be remembered as one of the main reasons for Liverpool’s success under Klopp.

“But he’s been in decline for two years, his role gradually evolving to the point where last year he was back-up to Diogo Jota and Sadio Mane.

“Now he seems to be first pick as the false nine again.

“That cannot be right, even if he has performed well in some of the games so far.”

Clarence Seedorf believes the 30-year-old should start every game.

However, he may struggle to find many others at Liverpool who agree with him.

Carragher’s opinion that Firmino should no longer be first choice will resonate with some Liverpool fans.

It will be interesting to see who Klopp goes with in their upcoming Champions League match against Ajax.
