‘Brilliant’: Sky pundit believes Everton man should start at the World Cup after performance vs Liverpool

Everton’s recent history in the Merseyside derby hasn’t been brilliant, winning once since 2011.

However, Frank Lampard’s side earned a deserved draw in Saturday’s early kick-off at Anfield.

Lampard’s side kept an important clean sheet, although they’re still without a win in the league this season.

One of the players who had a fantastic game was goalkeeper Jordan Pickford.

The England shot stopper was described as ‘outstanding’ by Leon Osman after the game.

And speaking on Sky Sports News (4/9 12:16) Clinton Morrison agreed with the former Everton man.

Morrison said: “He’s been brilliant to be fair, look at him, he loves it.

“He does make big saves to be fair.

“There’s a lot of competition for that England number one jersey, and a lot of people have questioned whether Jordan Pickford should be England’s number one.

“But all he has to do is keep producing form like he did yesterday, I thought he was outstanding.

“He shows that raw emotion at the end, how happy he is, he wants to make saves.

“It’s like when a striker scores a goal and he goes mad, why can’t a goalkeeper go mad when he makes a good save?

‘He was brilliant yesterday.”

Brilliant Pickford should start for England at the World Cup

Gareth Southgate has plenty of decisions to make ahead of the World Cup in November.

One of those will be to decide who starts between the sticks for the Three Lions.

Pickford was Southgate number one for the last World Cup and last year’s European Championships.

Everton’s keeper is nearing half a century of England caps, and will want to reach that milestone in Qatar.

The performances of Newcastle goalkeeper Nick Pope will have certainly given Southgate something to think about.

He’ll also be considering Arsenal’s Aaron Ramsdale, who has been a ‘great addition’ for the Gunners.

Morrison’s admission that Pickford should start for England at the World Cup if he keeps this form up is no surprise.

The 28-year-old was in supreme form, and few goalkeepers will thwart the likes of Mohamed Salah and Darwin Nunez like he did yesterday.
