'Brilliant acquisition': Garth Crooks thinks that Antonio Conte has pulled off a complete masterstroke at Tottenham Hotspur
Tottenham Hotspur forward Dejan Kulusevski put in brilliant display in the club’s Premier League opener on Saturday. And BBC pundit Garth Crooks thinks Antonio Conte has pulled off a masterstroke by bringing him to Spurs last January.
Kulusevski was in fine form against Southampton over the weekend as the Spurs man grabbed a goal and an assist on the opening day.
Conte’s men got the new season up-and-running with a 4-1 win over the Saints and the Swedish international was at the heart of a dazzling attacking display.
Ralph Hasenhuttl’s men struggled to deal with the 22-year-old as he looked a constant threat on the right-hand side.
And his performance has led to pundit Garth Crooks picking the player in his Premier League team of the week.
Conte masterstroke at Spurs
He wrote: “What a brilliant acquisition by Antonio Conte to bring Kulusevski to Spurs. This player has been a revelation since he arrived from Juventus in January, scoring five times and providing eight assists last term.
“And he continued in that vein, setting up Ryan Sessegnon’s opener and then scoring himself as Tottenham blew Southampton off the park.”
The former Spurs player was clearly blown away by Kulusevski’s performance on the weekend but questioned if Conte’s men can end the club’s 14-year trophy drought.
Crooks added: “However, the issue for Tottenham is can they win a trophy? Any trophy? This club seems to have lots of legends, but very few who have ever won anything. This squad of players would do very well not to join that category.”
Kulusevski will be key for Conte this season
If Tottenham are to end their trophy drought, you get the feeling that Kulusevski will play a key role in doing so.
Since joining the club from Juventus back in January, the Swede has been one of the standout attackers in the league.
He was a pivotal part of the team that regained Champions League football last season and bagged two goals on the final day against Norwich.
And Kulusevski looks to be picking back up where he left off last time out after a dazzling performance against Southampton.
