Report: PL club now want to sign 'magic' Euro 2020 star who Tottenham nearly signed six months back
According to reports from Gianluca di Marzio in Italy, Brentford are keen on signing Danish midfielder, Mikkel Damsgaard, for around £15m.
The impressive Sampdoria midfielder was one of the standout young players in Euro 2020, as he helped Denmark to the semi-finals. Lauded as a ‘magic‘ midfielder for some of his international performances, it is only six months ago that Tottenham declared an interest in signing Damsgaard.
However, Di Marzio now claims that it is indeed Brentford who are most likely to sign Damsgaard, with Thomas Frank keen to bring his fellow countryman to the Bees. Damsgaard, 22, suffered an injury hit season last term and managed only 11 appearances in Italy. He did return before the end of the season, though, and is now fit once more.
Damsgaard has been monitored by a number of clubs in Europe throughout his time with Sampdoria. Interestingly, though, the Dane only has two goals in his 49 appearances for the club.
With those figures in mind, it might be easy to say that’s why Tottenham didn’t pursue their interest. But Brentford are renowned for taking players on and helping them get to their best level. Further, the Bees already signed Christian Eriksen last year, who is more than likely to put in a good word for the club to Damsgaard.
TBR’s View: Damsgaard Can Shine At Brentford Under Frank
This is a player we’ve mentioned in the last few windows so it’s little surprise to see him being mentioned again.
Brentford would be pulling off smart business by signing him. Damsgaard has bags of quality and while the stats might not light things up, he is a player who is key for his country.
At 22, there is time for him to improve even more and at just £15m or so, you’d have to say it’s a risk worth taking for Brentford really.
