'I’m fully focused on Rangers': Watford linked player addresses transfer speculation
Rangers star Borna Barisic has had his say on the recent transfer speculation surrounding him.
Borna was speaking to the media ahead of Rangers trip to Pittodrie tomorrow night to face Aberdeen.
Barisic had been the subject of a rejected £2m bid from Watford in early January.
The fan favourite has been linked with AS Roma in recent windows.
When asked about the reported interest from England, Borna responded
“I’m focused on Rangers, that’s what is most important.”
Barisic claimed he did not read newspapers but had heard a lot of “wrong information” regarding him.
However, he did concede that not all the reported information was inaccurate.
When asked if he expected to still be at Rangers at the start of February, he answered
“You never know in football, you know how it goes. If somebody comes and says £30million for Borna, I will not be here.
“So, I cannot tell you the right answer and maybe you will say that I lied.”
When asked later in the interview if there was any genuine interest in this window the player replied
“It was, yes.”
Barisic refused to divulge any details and stated that his situation would become clear at the beginning of February [transfer window end].
When asked how he reacted to the interest, Barisic looked to reaffirm his commitment to Rangers
“The most important thing, as I said, is Rangers, I am 29 years old, I am very experienced.”
Pointing to the Rangers badge on his jacket, he claimed he was “100% committed” in training and in matches
“Without that, it’s impossible to play here.”
Barisic new role under GVB
Borna Barisic has had a different role in Giovanni Van Bronckhorst side than under Steven Gerrard.
Gerrard’s side were heavily reliant on both full backs getting forward to create attacks.
Barisic form this season had not been great under Gerrard, with reported calls from the stands for him to be dropped.
His season has been galvanised with the appointment of Giovanni Van Bronckhorst.
Borna now plays a more cautious role, primarily focusing on the defending aspect of the game.
Despite his impressive assist’s stats, he now looks more comfortable in his new role.
When asked about his change of role, he said
“Yes, you can see that the full-backs don’t have the same things to do as under Steven Gerrard
“I’m happy with it. It’s just part of the tactic, every game is another tactic it’s not always the same.
“For me sometimes I can go up and down, sometimes not. It also depends on who we play.”
Before Giovanni was appointed Rangers were leaking goals at an alarming rate.
Since GVB’s arrival, the ship has steadied, and Borna et al have only conceded two goals, one being against top opposition in Lyon.
Will he be here in February?
The player spoke of his commitment to the club in the press conference.
However, he repeatedly said his future would become more clear at the start of February.
We have been here before with Borna.
Is there a possibility of him leaving? Was the commitment claims just soundbites? Is a new contract on offer?
Rangers fans will be relishing the closing of the window and putting an end to the speculation over Barisic.
With just over two weeks remaining in the transfer window he would be an important player to replace midway through such an important campaign.
