‘Big competition’: West Ham United now ahead of French club to sign 23-year-old with ‘great future’

West Ham United are in pole position to sign French defender Dan-Axel Zagadou on a free transfer, according to journalist Fabrice Hawkins.

The journalist believes that West Ham are ahead of Lyon in trying to sign the 23-year-old.

The centre-back is a free agent after leaving Borussia Dortmund in the summer.

His former manager Marco Rose believes he has a ‘great future’, but now needs a new club to fulfil that potential.

Hawkins said: “Info @RMCsport Lyon are interested in Dan-Axel Zagadou.

“Peter Bosz wants to strengthen behind and the defender is free of any contract.

“Big competition from West Ham which is in pole position on this file.

“The English offer a 4-year contract to the former Dortmund player.”

West Ham in pole position for Zagadou

David Moyes has been dealing with an injury crisis in defence this season.

New signing Nayef Aguerd, Craig Dawson, Angelo Ogbonna and Ben Johnson have all been absent at some point this season.

West Ham did bring in PSG defender Thilo Kehrer to boost his options, and has been impressed by the German.

Dawson and Ogbonna are both now available to Moyes after a disrupted pre-season.

Zagadou would give Moyes another option in defence, but has had injury issues of his own.

The Frenchman has struggled with knee problems, and has twice missed months of action due to injuries.

Zagadou did break back in Dortmund’s side at the end of the last season, starting their last five matches.

The defender has a lot of potential, and needs a run of matches to reach his highest level.

West Ham offering him a four-year deal suggests they’re willing to gamble on his long-term fitness.

It’s an exciting prospect, and West Ham will do well to stay in pole position for Zagadou ahead of Lyon.
