Steven Bergwijn was amongst those to take to Instagram to wish Sergio Reguilon well in reaction to the Tottenham Hotspur left-back’s move to Atletico Madrid.

Spurs announced on Tuesday that Reguilon has secured a return to La Liga. His departure has come as absolutely no surprise given that the 25-year-old has played no role in Antonio Conte’s plans so far this season.

Reguilon spent much of his time in North London as first-choice. However, Conte brought in Ivan Perisic in the summer. And it has been the Croatian providing competition for Ryan Sessegnon.

There has been plenty of speculation surrounding Reguilon’s future. Reports have suggested that clubs from Juventus to Nottingham Forest have eyed a deal for the Spain international.

But he is moving elsewhere. It was announced on Tuesday that the defender will spend the season with Atletico Madrid as a replacement for Renan Lodi, who did end up at Forest.

Reguilon has taken to Instagram to comment on making the move. And amongst those to reply was Bergwijn, who also left Tottenham earlier in the window…

There is a very large question mark over what Reguilon’s long-term future at Tottenham holds. Obviously, the longer Antonio Conte remains at the helm, the less likely it is that he will play for Spurs again.

But Reguilon is a very good player. You do not play for the likes of Real Madrid, Sevilla, Spurs and Atletico without being a class act. However, it does seem that he is not suited, in Conte’s eyes, to the system at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

The ideal for the Spurs boss may well be that Reguilon is a huge success at Atleti – so he attracts a permanent bid from somewhere next summer.
