Ben Foster believes that the Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeping coach will be furious with Guglielmo Vicario after Tottenham Hotspur were knocked out of the FA Cup by Manchester City.
Spurs will be disappointed with how their FA Cup campaign came to an end. Of course, it was always going to be incredibly difficult to overcome Manchester City – despite their outstanding record against Pep Guardiola’s men at home. But Ange Postecoglou’s men struggled to lay a glove on the Premier League champions.
It was a late goal which decided the tie. Nathan Ake poked the ball home as Tottenham failed to deal with a Manchester City corner.
Guglielmo Vicario criticised as Tottenham exit the FA Cup
Immediately, it became clear that Guglielmo Vicario was unhappy with the role of Ruben Dias in the goal. Dias stood on Vicario in the six-yard box. And the Portuguese did get in Vicario’s way as the corner came over.

However, the goal stood. And it did appear that it would have been incredibly soft to disallow the goal. Speaking on his YouTube channel, Ben Foster believes that Vicario should have done so much better, even before the corner was even taken.
“The Tottenham goalie coach at that moment in time should be watching going, what is going on? How is he allowed to just stand there? Why is my goalie not taking charge of this and getting a defender, pulling him out of a position on the edge of the box, pulling him in there and saying you stand on the front of this guy here. Don’t let him be able to block me off and then try and get contact as well,” he said.
Brilliant summer signing makes very rare mistake
You can understand why Tottenham fans may have been annoyed by the goal being given. The threshold for how much contact represents a foul on the goalkeeper never seemed to be that high. So many would have expected the goal to be ruled out after a VAR check.
But there is no question that Vicario should have done better. Foster himself, has labelled Vicario the best goalkeeper in the Premier League this season. And Vicario is incredibly popular behind the scenes at Tottenham. But he did not cover himself in glory against Manchester City.
He has been an exceptional signing at £17 million. However, he did make an error for City’s winner.
