'Been discussed': Romano claims Newcastle are looking at Ronaldo-like player with £339m release clause

Fabrizio Romano has claimed that Newcastle United have discussed moving for Barcelona’s Memphis Depay.

The Italian was speaking on Rio Ferdinand Presents FIVE’s transfer show, Gazzetta dello FIVE.

Newcastle have been linked with the Netherlands international in recent days.

7 Transfers That Were TERRIBLE For Everyone Involved

Spanish outlet Sport claims the Magpies and Premier League rivals Everton have been eyeing Depay.

And Arsenal have apparently also in pursuit of the 28-year-old.

Depay, who previously played for Manchester United, is heading into the final year of his Barca contract.

That said, Sport reports that the Catalan giants have the option to extend his terms by a further year.

Depay joined Barcelona on a free transfer last summer and has a reported €400m (£339m) release clause.

He has registered 12 goals and two assists from 27 La Liga appearances this season.

However, the arrival of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang in January has meant Depay has often played out wide under Xavi.

FIVE hosts Joel Beya and Stephen Howson asked Romano about Newcastle’s transfer business.

He spoke about Dean Henderson being a potential target before moving on to the Dutchman.

“Memphis Depay, he’s one of the names that have been discussed,” said Romano.

“But at the moment, from Barcelona, they still see him as an option to stay at the club for next season.

“It’s still something really open.”

“A little bit like Cristiano”

Back in 2015, Manchester United signed Depay from PSV Eindhoven, arriving to much fanfare.

In an interview on MUTV – via The Mirror – Voetbal International journalist Thijs Slegers said: “Memphis is a little bit like Cristiano.

“They have similar qualities, although there are of course areas where Memphis is inferior. However, his determination to be the best is where I see the real similarity with Cristiano.”

Sadly, Memphis struggled at Old Trafford, though he has certainly developed as a player since.

The Netherlands international may feel he has unfinished business in the Premier League.

Newcastle, with their financial muscle and exciting project, should certainly try and bring him back to England.
