Garth Crooks has BBC Sport that Fabian Schar is in contention to make his team of the season after the defender scored for Newcastle United in their latest Premier League win.

The Magpies have moved another giant step towards safety. They beat Brighton 2-1 at the weekend. Only Liverpool have taken more points from their last six games.

Schar was part of a Newcastle backline who produced a colossal defensive display. The trio of Schar, Dan Burn and Emil Krafth managed 18 clearances between them (Whoscored).

The Swiss also managed three interceptions and won four aerial duels. Crucially, he also scored what proved to be the winner at St James’ Park.

It comes after Schar provided an assist in the win at Brentford the previous weekend. And Crooks suggested that his performances have been a revelation of late.

“Last week Fabian Schar was making goals, this week he’s scoring them. It was great movement and a brilliant header and the Magpies are flying,” he told BBC Sport.

“It’s the second consecutive time that Schar has made my team of the week and if he keeps on playing like this he might make my team of the season.”

Of course, Eddie Howe will be wary of getting carried away. But it does appear that the Magpies are only a couple of wins away from ensuring that they will remain in the Premier League next year.

With that, Newcastle’s potential could be frightening. Certainly, the fans will be expecting an amazing summer after a January window that was still busy despite the threat of relegation.

A number of players within the current squad will likely be aware that they have a huge point to prove in the months ahead. They will want to show that they are good enough to be a part of the Newcastle squad in the years ahead.

It does appear that Schar is set to stick around. Reports claimed that he has now been offered a new contract.

Performances like the one on Saturday show exactly why Newcastle want to keep Schar as they head into a new era.
