BBC pundit tears into Joe Gomez after terrible error for Liverpool

Steven Thompson has told BBC Sport that the mistake from Joe Gomez during the first-half of Liverpool’s Champions League tie with Rangers was terrible as the defender presented a golden opportunity to Antonio Colak.

The Reds would have known that they would likely face a tougher task than when the same two teams met at Anfield last week. Rangers had to go out and target the win. And they had Ibrox on their side on Wednesday.

And it was the Gers who started the game in style. Scott Arfield finished brilliantly to give Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s side a 1-0 lead and send Ibrox into a frenzy.

Gomez started at right-back following the injury Trent Alexander-Arnold sustained at the weekend. And he gifted an opportunity to Colak with a poor back pass towards Alisson after 21 minutes.

Thankfully for Liverpool, Colak was not able to make the most of the chance. And the visitors would be the ones to score next, with Roberto Firmino equalising from a corner.

Certainly, former Rangers striker Thompson did not hold back in his criticism of Gomez’s mistake.

“Big chance that. It’s a terrible error from Gomez, Colak reads it, but tries to knick it and gets it all wrong,” he told BBC Sport.

“This Liverpool side are rocked.”

Obviously, Gomez is not naturally a right-back. His best times at Liverpool have been at centre-back. And he may not have been playing out wide were it not for the injury to Alexander-Arnold.

The concern may have been that Gomez is not able to fill in for Alexander-Arnold. Tony Cascarino told The Times this week that he is not good enough to deputise for the England international.

However, Gomez went on to look a lot like Alexander-Arnold during the second-half, producing a sumptuous cross to set up Firmino for his second goal of the night.
