Cascarino says Joe Gomez is not good enough to cover Alexander-Arnold

Tony Cascarino has told The Times that Joe Gomez is not good enough to deputise for Trent Alexander-Arnold for Liverpool as he outlined how the Reds’ lack of depth is causing them real issues.

It is hardly a hot take to suggest that Liverpool have had a really poor start to the campaign. The Reds now sit 10th in the Premier League table and they have not won any of their last three games.

Jurgen Klopp’s side were beaten by Arsenal at the Emirates on Sunday. Liverpool had a very bright spell later on in the first-half. But ultimately, they were unable to cope with the Gunners at times.

Joe Gomez is not good enough

The Reds were handed a couple of injury issues in the game. Luis Diaz is now set to be sidelined until December. And Alexander-Arnold also came off at the break. The right-back was on the receiving end of a nasty clash with Gabriel Martinelli during the first-half.

It was Gomez who replaced Alexander-Arnold. The 25-year-old worked hard when he came on. However, Cascarino believes that he is not at the level required after his performance at the Emirates.

“Much has been made of Liverpool’s astute signings and clever spending (and selling) in recent seasons. But, as much as that praise has been deserved, if you look at the squad now it lacks strength in depth,” he told The Times.

“They don’t really have appropriate backup in key areas of the pitch — Joe Gomez is not good enough to deputise for Trent Alexander-Arnold and in midfield the likes of Curtis Jones haven’t kicked on to provide genuine competition for those in front.”

Everything just feels a little stale about Liverpool right now. So many of the current squad have enjoyed incredible careers on Merseyside and have secured their spots in club folklore.

As Cascarino notes, they have got so much right in the transfer market in recent years. But it does appear that it is going to be a long and disappointing campaign for the Reds as things stand.

And it is not entirely clear how they move forward when so many of their players are struggling for form at the same time.
