Clinton Morrison has suggested that one Aston Villa star proved why he is a top player with an outstanding performance against Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday.

Unai Emery’s side came from behind to earn a massive three points in North London, with Pau Torres and Ollie Watkins scoring for the visitors.

Emi Martinez outstanding in Aston Villa win

But Villa came under pressure, and they were grateful to Emi Martinez for producing a stunning display, during which he made a number of outstanding saves.

As soon by Whoscored, Martinez made six saves during the game. And he was incredibly unlucky to concede the opening goal, with Giovani Lo Celso’s strike taking a wicked deflection off of Diego Carlos.

Martinez looked like a World Cup winner in the second-half, in particular. And it was after an attack which saw both Brennan Johnson and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg denied where Clinton Morrison was particularly impressed by the £20 million star.

“The save from Brennan Johnson is the one for me. It’s brilliant because it’s good play between Heung-min Son and Brennan Johnson and he toe-pokes it and he saves it,” he told BBC Radio Five Live.

“The other save is outstanding as well, that’s why he’s a top goalkeeper.”

Villans thankful Argentinian stayed put

It was a real statement for Aston Villa. Tottenham were the early pace-setters in the Premier League. And while they lost their last two before the international break, they were able to take the game to Emery’s men.

But Villa picked up the three points to close the gap at the top of the Premier League table. They sit in the top four. And they cannot be too far away from being considered title contenders.

It has been an interesting few months for Martinez. Obviously, he won the World Cup last year. And he has been exceptional throughout his time at Villa Park.

But there were reports from the Daily Mail suggesting that Aston Villa would have listened to offers for Martinez in the summer.

It certainly seems like a blessing that Martinez ended up staying put.
