Bastian Schweinsteiger says Man United had the greatest passer in football history

Bastian Schweinsteiger is one of the game’s most iconic midfielders, but even he was blown away by a Manchester United player with an incredible passing range.

Schweinsteiger spent an unhappy two-year spell at Old Trafford between 2015 and 2017, having been brought to the club by Louis van Gaal from Bayern Munich.

However, he was banished to the reserves by Jose Mourinho and prevented from using the first-team dressing room, and eventually left to join Chicago Fire in MLS.

Years later, Bastian Schweinsteiger holds no ill feelings toward United, and he has now named one of their club legends as the player with the best distribution in history.

Bastian Schweinsteiger says David Beckham was best-ever passer

Answering a series of quickfire questions on his personal X account, he was asked who he believed was the greatest-ever passer of a football.

After a slight pause, Schweinsteiger replied: “Probably [David] Beckham.”

Beckham’s vision and technique were truly unparalleled, and Schweinsteiger would have watched him at the peak of his powers during his own illustrious career.

Schweinsteiger also name-dropped several other Man United heroes during the video, revealing he most wanted to be Eric Cantona when he was growing up.

The flattery didn’t stop there, either, with the World Cup winner declaring Jaap Stam was the hardest player he had ever encountered.

Despite the awkward nature of Schweinsteiger’s United departure, he later admitted it had always been a dream to play for the club, and to this day, he still has an affinity for them.

The 41-year-old made just 35 appearances at Old Trafford, scoring two goals and registering two assists.

But despite the turbulent nature of his stay, he has maintained an affection for United, previously describing them as his “second” team.

“It was also helping that Louis van Gaal knew me from before,” he told the UTD Podcast. “He was obviously the coach of Man United which I always was a fan of. Finally, then in 2015 it was happening.

“Bayern Munich also let me go. I was happy about it, that they understood my way of thinking as well.

“I enjoyed it so much at United. I remember everything quite well and like so many nice personalities, team-mates, players with the right heart and obviously the supporters are amazing as well.

“Unfortunately, the second season was a little bit more difficult.”
