Marcus Rashford stole the show as Barcelona held on to beat Newcastle United 2-1 in the Champions League.
The first round of this season’s Champions League league phase came to an end on Thursday night, with Newcastle United’s clash against Barcelona stealing the focus.
Newcastle fans created an incredible atmosphere at St James’ Park, and the Magpies carved out some real openings in the first half.
Barcelona settled and took a 2-0 lead, with Marcus Rashford scoring both goals, including a stunning long-range strike.
Anthony Gordon pulled one back late on, but it wasn’t enough as Barcelona ran out winners thanks to Rashford’s brace – though Newcastle fans may feel Gerard Martin could have been sent off.

Barcelona goalkeeper praises Marcus Rashford
Lamine Yamal’s injury meant a start for Rashford, and it was only right that he marked his return to England with a fine display.
Rashford headed home Barcelona’s opener before smashing an absolute rocket past Nick Pope in the Newcastle goal.
Manchester United loanee Rashford has these moments of quality in his locker, but we just haven’t seen them often enough in recent years.
Barcelona goalkeeper Joan Garcia certainly likes what he has seen from Rashford, though, and has praised the England forward.
As quoted by DAZN, stopper Garcia noted that Barcelona players are already used to seeing Rashford score such incredible goals in training.
Garcia still marvelled at Rashford actually pulling that strike off in a game, and praised him for working hard in training since joining from United.
“It’s been incredible, although he’s gotten us used to it in training. To do it in a match, at a time like this, imagine… He has a very good shot, I’m very happy for him, he’s working very hard and very well, and I’m glad he was able to have a match like this,” said Garcia.

Ronald Araujo blown away by Marcus Rashford
Goalkeeper Garcia was seen with his hands on his head after watching Rashford’s strike find the net.
It turns out Garcia isn’t the only Barcelona player to be blown away by Rashford, with defender Ronald Araujo also impressed.
Again quoted by DAZN, Araujo – Barcelona’s captain on the night – hailed Rashford as ‘spectacular’.
Araujo backed up Garcia’s claim that Rashford has been scoring similar goals in training, hailing his ‘tremendous’ ability.
“Marcus is spectacular. We know him well; he does the same thing in training. We’re very happy to have him with us. He’s a great player, has tremendous quality, and we hope he continues to enjoy himself here with us,” said Araujo.
Barcelona players certainly seem to love Rashford, and will hope for more moments of magic as the pressure mounts on Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim, the man who let Rashford go.
