Barcelona are interested in making a move for Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Giovani Lo Celso during the January transfer window after losing Gavi for the rest of the season due to injury.

That is according to a report from Mundo Deportivo, which notes that Xavi is keen for the Catalan giants to reignite their interest in the midfielder.

Barcelona eyeing Giovani Lo Celso move in January

Giovani Lo Celso has endured a difficult season in North London. The Argentinian has only made three substitute appearances for Ange Postecoglou’s men after spending much of the previous couple of years out on loan with Villarreal.

Barcelona wanted Lo Celso in the summer. And it seems that they could look again at the 27-year-old when the winter window opens.

Barca were dealt the huge blow of losing Gavi to injury. As reported by ESPN, he is unlikely to play again this season after tearing his anterior cruciate ligament while with Spain.

Mundo Deportivo reports that Xavi sees Lo Celso as a fantastic option for January, with a new midfielder a priority in the light of the news surrounding Gavi.

Spurs may have reservations about letting midfielder leave

It remains to be seen if Tottenham would be willing to let Lo Celso leave. Spurs are set to be without James Maddison for the rest of the year. So there may be an opportunity for him to make an impression over the coming weeks.

Tottenham are also amongst the early pace-setters in the Premier League. So they will be wary of letting anyone leave in January if they are currently in and around the squad. Lo Celso has been described as an ‘incredible‘ player in the past.

But if Lo Celso is not playing more and Barcelona come calling, it is surely going to be incredibly difficult for Tottenham to convince the midfielder he needs to stay put for the rest of the campaign.
