Ballon d'Or: Jose Enrique delivers honest verdict as Jorginho outranks Liverpool's Mo Salah
As surprising as it was for some fans to see Lionel Messi win the Ballon d’Or last night, Mohamed Salah finishing seventh in the rankings was the biggest shock to Liverpool supporters.
Almost every fan’s eyes were on France Football’s annual event yesterday. Robert Lewandowski deserved to win it in many people’s eyes, but Messi took the crown yet again, and he’s now two clear of Cristiano Ronaldo.
As good as Messi, Ronaldo and even Lewandowski are, Liverpool fans are convinced that Salah is the best player in the world at the moment. Everybody knew he wasn’t going to win the Ballon d’Or this year, but seeing him seventh on the list has really irked a few people.
One such disappointed Liverpool fan is Jose Enrique.
Jose Enrique on Ballon d’Or rankings: Salah finishing behind Jorginho is a joke
The Spanish full-back, who is still adored by many Liverpool fans, is very vocal about the game on his social media these days.
He took to his Instagram last night to have his say on the Ballon d’Or rankings, and it’s safe to say, he wasn’t happy.
Enrique wrote: “Salah 7th is a joke!
“He should be at least in the top 3. Cant be Jorginho or Kante before him even if they are great players but come on….and even Benzema is a great player as well but before Salah…”
Ronaldo, Kante, Benzema, Jorginho, Lewandowski and Messi were the six players who finished ahead of Salah in the Ballon d’Or rankings.
A case can be made for a few of them, but Salah has every right to be a little disappointed about the fact that he didn’t finish higher than the likes of Kante and Jorginho in the official standings.
However, Jorginho and Kante won the Champions League last season, while the former added the European Championships to his collection as well. That probably gave them the edge over the Liverpool star.
It will be interesting to see how the rankings will be next year. If the results were to be announced today, Salah would be on top of most people’s list, but there’s still a long way to go until 2022’s winner is announced.
