'It will hurt them, without a doubt': Chris Sutton highlights big January problem for Liverpool

Chris Sutton believes Liverpool will be the most affected side in the Premier League when African players head to AFCON in January.

The Reds are in a decent position now and if a couple of results go their way, they will climb to the top of the league table. Jurgen Klopp will be hoping that his men can get their hands on the title again, but AFCON could really hurt them.

Mo Salah has been one of the best players in the world and he’ll be a massive miss. Sadio Mane is a huge player for the Reds as well, and his absence will weaken Liverpool’s attack even further.

A few other top sides will lose players to AFCON too, but Sutton believes no club in the Premier League will be hit as hard as Liverpool.

Chris Sutton: AFCON will hurt Liverpool

The Englishman wrote in his column on The Daily Mail: “It (AFCON) will hurt them, without a doubt. How could losing Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane for a month or so not?

“The Africa Cup of Nations starts on January 9. Jurgen Klopp does not know if Salah and Mane will be around to face Chelsea the week before or if they will be jetting off for a pre-AFCON training camp with their respective nations.

“Worse still, while away, they could pick up injuries or get caught up in the ever-changing Covid restrictions and need to isolate on return.

“Other clubs will lose players, too. But it is Liverpool who will take the biggest hit. Even a single point lost could prove costly in this race of fine margins.”

Losing Sadio Mane and Mo Salah for a few weeks would be a massive blow for Liverpool.

The two African attackers are arguably Liverpool’s best players, and without them, Klopp will have to come up with something special to get the best out of his side.

It will be interesting to see how Liverpool will line up without Salah and Mane.

The obvious guess would be Diogo Jota on the left and Roberto Firmino up top with someone like Takumi Minamino on the right. However, it won’t be a surprise to see Klopp change things up and bring Divock Origi into the mix.
