Aston Villa were very much one of the busiest clubs in the country this summer but even they couldn’t get every deal they wanted doing over the line.
The Villans spent another fortune on new players as the likes of Ian Maatsen and Amadou Onana arrived alongside younger stars like Jadon Philogene and Samuel Illing-Junior.
With a Champions League campaign to come, Unai Emery wanted depth in his squad and in the main, he did get it.
However, like every Premier League manager, Emery wanted more.
And according to Fabrizio Romano, Villa did indeed try to sign more as they looked to bring in Lille striker, Jonathan David.

Why Aston Villa failed to sign Jonathan David
Writing in his latest Daily Briefing for CaughtOffside, Romano has suggested that David was indeed a top target for Villa but in the end, the move simply broke down.
“While it is too early to predict what might happen next summer, when Jonathan David’s contract expires at Lille, we can explain what happened with him this summer, which could provide some hints,” Romano said.
“David was one of the players that was most enquired about this summer, from many teams. It looked like Aston Villa would go after him with everything they had, but the deal never came off because they could not find an agreement with either the player or the club.”
David was linked with a move to a number of big clubs in England in the summer.
Arsenal were said to be one of the teams considering a late move for David, while Tottenham also had a well-known interest on David as well.
Regarded as one of the ‘elite‘ strikers in Europe, David has been linked with a move to England for some time now.
And with his contract ticking down, it won’t be a surprise to see him mentioned once again when January rolls around.
Lille value David around the £25m mark but that value will drop the longer his current situation remains unresolved.
