Alasdair Gold, football.london’s Spurs correspondent, has provided an update on Tottenham’s pursuit of Cristian Romero.

Spurs is currently buzzing with transfer speculation, with Fabio Paratici working hard to bolster the Tottenham ranks.

And multiple outlets suggest Spurs are closing in on Atalanta’s Romero, the reigning Serie A defender of the season.

“Cristian Romero is a superb player,” Gold said on the Tottenham Talk Live Transfer Q&A.

If Spurs can pull that one off I think they’d transform their defence with one player.

“The state of play with that one as I am aware today is that there’s still dialogue taking place to try and make that deal happen.

“It’s a very complicated one to do because it’s going to be big money.

“Tottenham obviously aren’t ones for just laying out big money as it is so it’s all about how it’s structured, whether they meet the actual asking price…

“As I understand it… Romero is the one (centre-back) he (Paratici) would like the most, so hopefully it will happen because it would be transformative.”

Sky Sports reported on Friday afternoon that Spurs have made Atalanta an offer of at least £34m plus £8.5m in bonuses for Romero.

Spurs target Romero: His career so far

Romero came through the ranks at Argentine club Belgrano, but made just 18 competitive appearances before moving to Europe.

The 6ft centre-back linked up with Genoa in 2018 and made a name for himself with the Grifone.

Italian giants Juventus made their move a year later and bought him for a reported £23.4million.

Juve loaned Romero back to Genoa for the 2019-20 season, clocking up a total of 60 appearances for the club over two years.

The following summer, Romero joined Atalanta on a two-year loan with an option to buy for a reported £13.8million.

As per football.london, La Dea may look to buy the player a year early then sell him for a profit.

Romero is thought to be valued at around £52million by Atalanta, for whom he has made 42 appearances so far.

The player has also won five caps for Argentina and was part of the squad that won the Copa America this summer.
