Anderlecht left-back Sergio Gomez was reportedly on Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta’s wish list before the Gunners signed Oleksandr Zinchenko, but the Spaniard is now about to join Manchester City.

The Gunners went into the market this summer in search of a new option at left full-back. Kieran Tierney is the first-choice at the Emirates, but the Scotsman has had a torrid time with injuries since joining the club.

Arsenal had Nuno Tavares as a backup in that role, but the second half of last season showed that he’s not quite ready to play every week in the toughest league in the world.

The Gunners simply had to bring in a new left-back and Zinchenko was the man. However, Fabrizio Romano revealed just last month that Gomez was on Arsenal’s wish list too.

Manchester City are about to sign Sergio Gomez

Arsenal decided against signing Gomez and went with Zinchenko from Manchester City instead.

The Ukrainian is Premier League proven, has loads of experience and is hugely versatile. That made him a much better option for Arsenal this summer – even though Gomez is a hugely talented player in his own right.

The Spaniard didn’t get his move to Arsenal, but he’s now set for an even bigger transfer.

Romano revealed yesterday that Gomez is on the verge of joining Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City this summer. If the reported £12.6 million deal goes through, he will replace Zinchenko at the Etihad following the Ukrainian’s move to Arsenal.

Gomez is an ‘extraordinary’ talent – there’s no debate on that front.

The 21-year-old, a product of Barcelona’s prestigious youth academy, had a phenomenal campaign last season. He scored seven goals and provided 15 assists for Anderlecht, which is a sensational return for a defender.

It is no surprise at all that Arsenal considered signing Gomez this summer, but Zinchenko was absolutely the better option, and the Gunners were right to go with him.

However, if Gomez’s deal to Manchester City goes through, he could develop into a sensational player under Guardiola.
