Report: Arsenal now want left-back previously deemed ‘one of the best players of his age in the world’

Arsenal have begun looking at other left-back targets after all-but missing out on Lisandro Martinez.

The Gunners were in the race for the Ajax ace, but he has reportedly chosen Manchester United instead.

One of the players now on Arsenal’s radar in that position is Manchester City’s Oleksandr Zinchenko.

However, Fabrizio Romano has claimed that the Gunners are now also looking at Anderlecht’s Sergio Gomez.

The transfer guru took to Twitter on Thursday afternoon with an update on Arsenal’s left-back pursuit.

He tagged David Ornstein for his initial report on Zinchenko and also claimed Nuno Tavares “could leave” if a new left-back joins.

Gomez joined Anderlecht in 2021 from Borussia Dortmund for a reported £2million.

He did well for the Belgians last season, registering seven goals and 15 assists from 49 outings.

Gomez is a product of Barcelona’s famed La Masia setup, spending seven-and-a-half years in their ranks.

In January 2018, Dortmund signed the then 17-year-old.

“Sergio Gomez is undoubtedly one of the best players of his age in the world,” their former sporting director Michael Zorc said at the time.

“We’ve been interested in him for some time and are happy that he has decided to join Borussia Dortmund despite offers from many top European clubs.”

Gomez only made three senior appearances for Dortmund before leaving for Anderlecht.

But he looks to have got his career back on track – could Arsenal be his next step?
