Arsenal transfer boost as Lazio reportedly eye Liverpool star
Lazio are interested in signing Liverpool star Xherdan Shaqiri this summer, according to Italian outlet Tuttomercatoweb – and that may possibly prove to be good news for Arsenal and their transfer hopes.
Shaqiri seems to have been linked with a potential move throughout much of his time on Merseyside.
The Swiss, of course, has never managed to make himself a first-team regular under Jurgen Klopp. In fact, he only made five starts in the Premier League last season.
And he could now be offered the chance to head to Serie A. According to Tuttomercatoweb, contact with Lazio has been initiated and could progress over the coming weeks.
And judging by previous reports, it may be a move that Arsenal keep a close eye on.
As noted by Tuttomercatoweb, Shaqiri is seen by Lazio as an alternative target to Julian Brandt.
Maurizio Sarri’s side would like to take Brandt on an initial loan. Borussia Dortmund meanwhile, value the 25-year-old at between £21.5 million and £25.8 million.
So it does appear that there is plenty of ground to make up before an agreement is reached. And with that, it seems that they could switch their attention to Shaqiri.
That may be good news for Arsenal. According to recent reports, the Gunners are also monitoring Brandt.
Could Liverpool star help Arsenal in transfer window?
Mikel Arteta’s men need more creativity in midfield. As things stand, Martin Odegaard is set to stay at Real Madrid next season.
Brandt has not had the best time since leaving Bayer Leverkusen for Dortmund. He only scored three times in the Bundesliga last season.
Having said that, he could still improve. He only made 17 starts in the top flight last year. And he only recently turned 25.
So he may thrive if given a key role once again.
Whether Arsenal are prepared to meet his asking price remains to be seen.
If they are interested, they will welcome Lazio pursuing Shaqiri and potentially taking themselves out of the race.
