Arsenal: Romano makes Emile Smith Rowe contract claim
Fabrizio Romano has told Que Golazo that Emile Smith Rowe has a verbal agreement with Arsenal and will sign a new contract with the Gunners when he returns from holiday.
Smith Rowe’s future has, surprisingly, been a real talking point this summer. The 20-year-old was outstanding for much of last season.
His form has prompted interest from Aston Villa. It was claimed on Tuesday that the Villans were not giving up on signing the attacking midfielder after seeing two bids turned down.
Arsenal meanwhile, are attempting to agree a new deal with Smith Rowe. It was previously stated that they would not sell the academy graduate for £75 million.
But it seems that the apparent lack of progress is concerning some supporters.
While no announcement is made, the door is left ever so slightly open for speculation surrounding whether he would be interested in a switch to Villa Park.
Stan Collymore, for example, hinted that Smith Rowe could have shut all talk down if he wanted to.
But Romano has insisted that everything is in place for the youngster to put Arsenal minds at rest.
“He’s not signed yet,” he told Que Golazo. “But before Emile was going to holiday this summer, he had a verbal agreement ready with Arsenal, this is what I know.
“So he’s waiting to come back from holiday and then to meet with Arsenal, complete some details and then sign the new contract with Arsenal.
“So from Smith Rowe’s side, he wants to stay at Arsenal, many times he said about he’s living his dream playing for Arsenal, he wants to stay and Arsenal are so happy with him.”
Arsenal’s best piece of business this summer if Smith Rowe signs new contract
Arsenal’s reported asking price always made a summer exit unlikely. Nevertheless, few pieces of business will be more popular than a new contract for Smith Rowe.
He established himself as a first-team star last season. And he looks to be a player Mikel Arteta can build his side around in the coming years.
So it is a huge boost that a new contract looks to be close.
But the supporters will still be a lot happier when an announcement is made.
