Arsenal proven right with summer decision as £23m man set for Barcelona exit
The chaos of the summer transfer window seems to be firmly in the memory bank now for Arsenal fans, as the nights draw darker and winter nears in the Premier League.
For Gunners fans, the transfer window is always a stressful time. Social media is full of rumour, opinion, and so-called ‘ITK-ers’ who claim to know the ins and outs of what the club needs and is doing.
Alas, this summer, Edu and Mikel Arteta pulled a few rabbits out of the hat with their business. The signings of Ben White and Aaron Ramsdale are already looking shrewd. At left-back, Nuno Tavares is showing potential, while in midfield, Albert Sambi Lokonga looks a steal.
But one of the best bits of business Arsenal seem to have done is sign the Japanese defender, Takehiro Tomiyasu. The impressive full-back was snatched from under the noses of Spurs late in the window.
The Gunners were after a right-back all summer. Among the names linked before Tomiyasu arrived was Barcelona man, Sergino Dest. But just a few months down the line, it looks like Arsenal made a brilliant call not pursuing a deal for Dest.
With Barcelona struggling off the back of Lionel Messi leaving and with their finances in ruins, it appears Dest is now another who is surplus to requirements.
In fairness to Dest, he has played most games this term. He’s appeared nine times in La Liga, playing right-back, left-back, and even on the wing. But it seems like it’s not going to be good enough. In fact, he’s only been on the winning side four times this season.
For Arsenal, they can look back on this as one of those transfers that they might have got away with. Of course, Tomiyasu’s excellent impact since his arrival helps.
Edu and Arteta came in for a lot of heat this summer. But with regards to Sergino Dest and Takehiro Tomiyasu, they appear to have got it spot on.
