Arsenal make £60m midfielder who can ‘do it all’ their No. 1 target for January

Arsenal have been linked with Aston Villa’s Douglas Luiz for a long time now and speculation is once again doing the rounds ahead of the January transfer window.

The Mirror have now reported that the Gunners have made the Brazil international their No. 1 target for when the market reopens in six weeks’ time.

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta reportedly wants to bolster his squad to strengthen the Gunners’ title challenge after a string of injuries to key players.‌

As a result, Arsenal may now prioritise a midfielder over a striker in the January transfer window in hope that they can wrestle the title from Manchester City this term.

The Gunners worked hard to try and sign Luiz in 2022. The Guardian reported that the North Londoners failed with a deadline-day move for him.

And during the last transfer window, journalist Dean Jones told GiveMeSport that Arsenal still want Luiz, saying it’s an “open secret”.

However, the Gunners once again face an uphill climb with regards to trying to persuade Villa to part company with one of their key players.

The Mirror claims the Villans would want a “sky-high” transfer fee for Luiz. And that is if they even entertain the possibility of the 25-year-old leaving mid-season.

Earlier in November, TEAMtalk reported that Luiz has been valued at around £60million.

There is no doubt that Arsenal would become an even better team if they signed Luiz. He has proven himself in the Premier League and in Europe.

“Douglas Luiz is the most underrated midfielder in the Premier League currently,” Paul Merson recently wrote on Sportskeeda.

“The lad can do it all and shows up every week; it’s not hard to see why Arsenal wanted him earlier this year.”

However, signing a key player from any club – particularly a top-flight club playing in Europe – is very difficult mid-season.

If any such move would happen, the likelihood is it would be in the summer, when the selling club can regroup.
