Report: Arsenal nearly broke their transfer record to sign Ruben Neves...but now he's set for £100k-a-week deal
Arsenal might have to put the potential signing of Ruben Neves on the backburner once and for all, with Wolves keen to tie him down to a new contract.
Neves has been a long-term target for the Gunners and it was reported just at the end of June how Arsenal would have had to pay a club-record £75m to land the midfielder. Of course, that deal never happened, with the Gunners instead spending their budget elsewhere.
However, even if Arsenal did intend to come back in for Neves, they face a big fight now. That’s because, according to The Times anyway, Wolves are stepping up their efforts to sign Neves to a new contract with the club. It’s claimed in The Times that Wolves will offer Neves £100k-a-week to sign, which is nearly double his current salary.
Wolves manager Bruno Lage has recently given Neves the captain’s armband following Conor Coady’s exit. The Molineux gaffer is desperate to keep Neves around and regards him as a key player.
Arsenal, meanwhile, are said to still be looking to bring in new faces before August’s end. This, despite spending more than £100m for the second successive summer.
TBR’s View: Neves To Arsenal Unlikely
You feel that Arsenal might have already got Neves in the building had they wanted to get him and it feels like Wolves get that sense of feeling too.
Of course, he’d be a superb signing for Arsenal in the middle of the park. The Gunners do look better there this season but any team in England would likely take Neves in the ranks.
If Wolves do give him that £100k-a-week deal, it’s a sign of how much they rate him. And in fairness, he is a key player for the club and has delivered some spectacular moments in recent seasons.
