Arsenal are about to sign David Raya in a deal that could end up embarrassing their next-door neighbours Tottenham Hotspur.

The Spanish goalkeeper has been linked with plenty of clubs over the course of the summer. Tottenham were one of them, but they couldn’t get a deal over the line.

Arsenal, however, are about to, and they’re set to do it in a way that Spurs probably didn’t even consider.

Arsenal’s David Raya deal could show up Daniel Levy and Tottenham

Nobody really expected Arsenal to sign a new goalkeeper this summer, but after Nottingham Forest came in for Matt Turner, the Gunners had to bring in a replacement.

David Raya quickly became Mikel Arteta’s number-one target, and it looks like Arsenal are about to get this done now.

David Ornstein revealed yesterday that the Gunners are actually set to sign Raya on loan by paying Brentford just £3 million. They will have an option to make the move permanent for £27 million at the end of this season.

That is an outrageous bit of business from Edu Gaspar and Arsenal, and it becomes even more impressive when you realise how Tottenham and Daniel Levy couldn’t do this.

Fabrizio Romano revealed last month that Raya had agreed to join Tottenham and a deal was ‘really close’. However, it collapsed after Brentford refused to budge on their £40 million asking price (The Debrief).

After trying really hard, Spurs decided to walk away from the deal, but Arsenal could be about to make it really embarrassing for their fierce rivals by pulling this off.

Tottenham found it impossible to drive David Raya’s price down when they wanted to sign him earlier in this window. Daniel Levy is usually a fantastic negotiator, but when even he failed, many felt Arsenal didn’t stand a chance.

However, Edu and co have really shown up Levy and Spurs here.

Signing a player like Raya on loan for just £3 million without being obligated to anything next year is just incredible business by Edu, who hasn’t got anything wrong in this window yet.

Perhaps this will convince Levy to accelerate his plans to appoint a new sporting director.
