A number of Arsenal fans have taken to Twitter to laud Mikkel Damsgaard following Denmark’s incredible Euro 2020 semi-final with England at Wembley, with many insisting that they would love to see the 21-year-old signed by the Gunners.

Three years ago, it was England who took the lead in a tournament semi-final through a free-kick before suffering a 2-1 defeat in extra-time.

This time however, Gareth Southgate’s men came from behind to secure their spot in the final. Harry Kane scored the winner from close range after initially having his penalty saved by Kasper Schmeichel.

The game marked the end of what must have been one of the most emotional journeys a country has ever been on at a major tournament.

Denmark’s heroes simply unable to go one more round

Denmark, of course, have been playing most of Euro 2020 for their teammate Christian Eriksen following the tragic events of their opening game of the competition.

Remarkably, they were able to get themselves all the way to the last four. It is easy to forget now that they lost both of their opening two group games.

However, they ultimately ran out of steam and England saw the game out in a professional fashion as the full-time whistle loomed.

Few decisions probably summed up the Danes simply being unable to go one more round than the decision to take Damsgaard off midway through the second-half.

Admittedly, the youngster has not played 90 minutes all tournament. In fact, he came off after only an hour against both Wales and the Czech Republic.

But he looked to be Denmark’s best player on Wednesday. And it was his outrageous free-kick that gave Kasper Hjulmand’s men the lead in the first-half.

He also nearly went through on goal at one stage. However, Kyle Walker had the pace to stop the opportunity.

Mikkel Damsgaard one of the real breakout stars of Euro 2020

Damsgaard caused England problems throughout the 67 minutes he spent on the pitch. Some of his touches were simply sublime.

And it is probably little surprise that the Danes looked a lot less threatening once the Sampdoria starlet had been replaced.

For many Arsenal fans, his performance showed exactly why the Gunners must consider a move for the attacking midfielder this summer.

It looks imperative that Mikel Arteta signs a new number 10. Martin Odegaard’s loan spell is over. And doubts persist over Emile Smith Rowe’s future.

Smith Rowe will surely stay. But Arsenal still need greater quality in those areas around the final third.

Damsgaard looks to be one of the most exciting prospects in Serie A. He was recently compared with Kevin De Bruyne by Nordsjaelland chairman Jan Laursen.

‘What a player’: Arsenal fans blown away as Mikkel Damsgaard shines at Euro 2020

It was recently reported that he could cost £26 million. But based on some of his displays throughout Euro 2020, that could easily prove to be a steal in years to come.

Denmark more than made their mark on Euro 2020. There were devastating reasons for that. But there were also moments when Europe saw incredible courage both when the ball was in play and when it was the last thing on everyone’s minds.

Damsgaard was one who enjoyed a breakout tournament. And plenty of Arsenal fans hope that the next chapter of his career is written at the Emirates…
