Arsenal fans urge Southampton to sign Gunners 25-year-old, as Rodgers bids for Vestergaard

Just days before the start of the Premier League, Southampton look as if they are about lose a pillar of their core. Jannik Vestergaard was crucial to the Saints last season – but he could be about to join Leicester City. Arsenal fans have reacted, urging Southampton to sign defender Rob Holding.

The transfer merry-go-round is hotting up as we enter the final three weeks of the window. Leicester are in need of signing a centre-back and needed one even before Wesley Fofana broke his leg in a pre-season friendly. It seems Brendan Rodgers is going after Southampton’s Vestergaard.

The 29-year-old defender was excellent for the Saints last season, in what was a season of two halves. Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side were excellent during the first half – but a multitude of injuries hampered Southampton in the home straight. Vestergaard was also excellent at Euro 2020.

He was crucial in Denmark’s run to the semi-finals where they eventually lost 2-1 to England – thanks to Harry Kane’s injury-time winner. Vestergaard returns to Southampton, where he is out of contract next summer. The Saints will have to sell the ex-Gladbach star if they want to bring in a fee.

Leicester bid for Vestergaard: What’s the story?

With Fofana injured, Leicester have moved to bring in Vestergaard. The Athletic report that the Foxes do have competition in pursuit of the 6ft 5in defender’s signature – from Wolves, West Ham and Tottenham. But it seems Leicester are winning the race, having tabled a bid.

The report states that Leicester have offered as much as £15million to sign Vestergaard this summer – half of what Danny Ings was sold for. But Southampton are said to be requesting a fee of £18million for Vestergaard. However, given the difference is just £3million, a compromise is expected.

It sees Leicester potentially add Vestergaard to a list of centre-backs that also includes Fofana, the experienced Jonny Evans and Caglar Soyuncu. Rodgers is also known to play three at centre-back. Daniel Amartey and Filip Benkovic are also options, but the duo are on the fringes of the side.

What are Arsenal fans saying about Holding and Southampton?

With Southampton potentially needing a centre-back following the sale of Vestergaard, Arsenal fans have sprung into action. Of course, Southampton now have some cash to spend having only spent £15million to bring in Adam Armstrong from Blackburn Rovers as a replacement for Ings.

Arsenal, meanwhile, have signed Ben White from Brighton. Pablo Mari and Calum Chambers have put their injury issues behind them, and Gabriel remains first choice. It means that uncapped Englishman Holding could leave the Gunners this summer – with his game time likely to reduce.

Arsenal fans have responded to the news that Rodgers is looking to bring Vestergaard to the King Power – and have made a suggestion. Many are desperate for Southampton to replace Vestergaard with Holding – given they want some much-needed cash for new signings of their own.
