Arsenal fans really need to be watching £40m player at the World Cup later today - opinion

Arsenal fans really need to be watching PSV attacker Cody Gakpo at the World Cup later today.

90 Min claimed this month that Arsenal sent scouts to watch Gakpo in action in the Eredivisie.

The Gunners have been on the lookout for attacking reinforcements and could be targeting a move for Gakpo ahead of the January window.

The Dutch striker has been in devastating form for PSV this season and is even outperforming Erling Haaland based on his attacking output. Gakpo has already scored 13 goals and provided 17 assists in just 23 appearances in all competitions.

Gunners fans will have watched Gakpo on two occasions already this season having faced off against PSV in the Europa League.

But with the 23-year-old in brilliant form ahead of Holland’s World Cup campaign, Arsenal fans may want to keep an eye on his progress throughout the tournament.

Holland are set to face off against Senegal tonight as they kick-off their campaign in Qatar.

Gakpo joins an array of attacking talent in Louis van Gaal’s squad, with the likes of Steven Bergwijn and Memphis Depay in the side.

But after his blistering start to the season, he looks set to play a key role in Holland’s World Cup campaign.

The PSV forward has only earned nine caps for the Netherlands so far, scoring three goals in the process. But he has started in four of their last six games in the Nations League.

Arsenal missed out on Raphinha to Barcelona over the summer, leaving them slightly light in terms of attacking depth.

Mikel Arteta will undoubtedly be keen to add some quality depth to compete with his impressive front-three of Gabriel Jesus, Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Martinelli.

And if reports are true, the £40 million-rated Gakpo could be a player who is on their list of potential targets.

The PSV man will be in action at 4pm today and Holland’s clash with Senegal will be shown on ITV 1.
