Arsenal fans react as Brazilian star shines in Olympics clash v Germany

Brazil sparkled in their opening Olympics outing on Thursday with a 4-2 win over Germany. A star-studded side that included Dani Alves, Richarlison and Douglas Luiz cruised to a 4-2 win despite a late scare. But Arsenal fans were impressed by another – in the form of Matheus Cunha.

Brazil got off to a flying start. A hat-trick from Everton attacker Richarlison inside 45 minutes got the Brazilians on their way – in what was a re-match of the gold medal final of 2016. It could have been four before half-time, only for Hertha Berlin star Cunha to miss from the penalty spot.

Nadiem Amiri and then Ragnar Ache got goals back from Germany to score the likes of Alves, Richarlison and Diego Carlos. But after Cunha missed another golden chance to put Brazil 4-2 up, substitute striker Paulinho – who plays for Bayer Leverkusen – wrapped things up with a gorgeous goal.

Cunha was guilty of missing numerous chances. But his combination play alongside Richarlison and Antony was stunning. The Brazil number nine created Richarlison’s opener with a gorgeous pass – and then laid on a second assist for Richarlison’s hat-trick. A brilliant display.

Why Arsenal could do with Cunha….

Arsenal need additions in the final third. The Gunners have Eddie Nketiah and Alexandre Lacazette in the final year of their contracts. Both are expected to go this summer. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Gabriel Martinelli are better from out wide and Folarin Balogun is still a rookie.

Cunha is naturally a striker, but can play as a 10 or on either flank as well. Bringing in a player with that attacking versatility is a massive benefit to Arsenal, who have already lost Martin Odegaard – and need to replace Willian. He offers huge quality in a number of different positions.

Not only that, but Cunha is still very young and will have a solid relationship with Gabriel Martinelli – who is also a part of the Olympics side. His form last season was excellent, producing 16 goal involvements during 28 games – despite playing out wide, up front and as a 10.

What have Arsenal fans said about Cunha?

Arsenal fans have reacted on Twitter to Cunha’s performance – who is being linked with a move to Leeds United at the moment. According to Berliner Kurier, clubs would have to spend £34.5million to get him. Arsenal fans gave their verdicts on his display, and it is clear Cunha has left a lasting impression.
