Arsenal fans discuss reports that they are battling Tottenham, Liverpool and others for Leeds ace Phillips
Arsenal are reportedly one of five clubs looking at signing Leeds United midfielder Kalvin Phillips – and Gunners fans have reacted on Twitter.
Phillips, 25, is one of England’s most in-form players at the moment – playing a pivotal part in the side that reached the Euro 2020 final.
Not only that, but Phillips is the heartbeat of a Leeds side that finished above Arsenal in ninth place last season. The Gunners are interested.
However, Arsenal are not alone. TeamTalk claim that Tottenham, Liverpool, Chelsea and Manchester City are also keen on 17-time England star Phillips.
But the report states that Leeds are ready to make Phillips their highest-paid player in order to keep him at the club. He has a deal until 2025.
Arsenal eye Phillips: What are fans saying about Leeds star?
Arsenal could do with another midfielder. They brought in Albert Lokonga, but allowed Matteo Guendouzi, Dani Ceballos and Lucas Torreira depart.
But it is a specific type of midfielder that Arsenal need. They have Thomas Partey, a defensive-minded anchor, Lokonga, Mo Elneny and Granit Xhaka.
What they lack, is a number eight. A progressive midfielder that receives the ball on the half turn and feeds their attack. Phillips can do that role.
He did so for England, playing in front of West Ham’s Declan Rice. However, for Leeds, Phillips plays as a four – in front of the defence as a quarter back.
Here is what Arsenal fans think of Phillips, who might prove to be incredibly expensive after his summer exploits. Many would love him.
