Journalist Ben Jacobs has told The Football Terrace that Arsenal are extremely confident about signing Lisandro Martinez, and sources close to the Gunners believe that the race for his signature is very open.

The race for Martinez continues to rumble on. It certainly appears that he is one of the final key targets for Mikel Arteta in this window.

Reports have previously claimed that Arsenal have made three bids for the Argentinian. The most recent of which was worth £38.7 million.

But Manchester United also want the Ajax defender. And of course, their new manager knows Martinez extremely well from their time together with the Eredivisie giants.

That may leave some Arsenal fans fearing for their chances of winning the battle for the 24-year-old. However, Jacobs claimed that there is plenty of optimism around the Emirates about the likelihood of a deal for Martinez.

“If you talk to Manchester United sources, they reveal that Ten Hag is pushing really hard. Martinez is the priority. It’s very easy to say that he knows Ten Hag, he likes Ten Hag, it’s a natural fit, Manchester United just have to agree a fee and it’s a deal done,” he told The Football Terrace.

“But the twist is that Arsenal are also extremely confident. And the challenge for Manchester United coming in late, even with the Ten Hag factor, was always going to be that Arsenal were more advanced.

“Martinez was also very sold on talking to Arteta.

“When you talk to Arsenal sources, they say it’s an open race and they’re equally as confident.”

Arsenal are clearly building something impressive. Their signings all appear to be a part of a very clear plan. And they are not panicking trying to get players through the door.

Signing Martinez would see Arsenal strengthen at the heart of the defence, as well as at left-back and in holding midfield. He is a title-winner with the potential to improve further.

United have an advantage in the sense that Martinez knows what to expect from Ten Hag. But it is surely fair to say that it is not the most appealing opportunity to move to Old Trafford right now.

So Arsenal must have a very good chance of securing a deal.
