Arsenal could make Matheus Cunha move in January - journalist

Journalist Dean Jones has told Give Me Sport that Arsenal are waiting in the wings in case there is a deal to be done for Matheus Cunha during the January transfer window.

Cunha may well be on the move to the Premier League next month. He has had a difficult spell with Atletico Madrid. In fact, a recent report from 90min claimed that Atleti may even be open to a loan deal for the Brazilian.

And a raft of English sides have shown an interest in the 23-year-old. That report listed eight Premier League clubs who have either contacted Cunha’s representatives or been offered the striker.

One side which was not on the list was Arsenal. However, The Athletic has suggested that the Gunners are considering entering the frame after losing Gabriel Jesus to injury.

And Jones has now claimed to Give Me Sport that Arsenal could indeed end up making a move for Cunha.

“If you’re Arsenal and looking to make the right decisions that define a title challenge, nothing can be dismissed or given up on lightly. That’s why they’ll have their eye on situations like this one,” he told Give Me Sport.

“They’re biding their time is how I would read it. They’re waiting to see if there’s an opportunity here.”

Bigger risk for Gunners may be not signing another striker

It would be a gamble for Arsenal to let the window pass without signing a new striker. Jesus has been so influential since his arrival in the summer. And not having him is a considerable blow.

Cunha has not been prolific for Atletico. But he has been labelled an ‘extraordinary‘ talent in the past. And his performances have arguably been better than his record would suggest. And he seems to tick some of the same boxes as Jesus.

He works extremely hard for the team. FBRef shows that few forwards across Europe make more tackles, win more interceptions or make more blocks.

And Atletico are ready to let him go. So there is potentially an opportunity for Arsenal to secure a possible bargain in the window.

With so much interest, it seems likely that a club will be ready to meet Atleti’s demands at some point.

But the longer he remains on the market, perhaps the more likely it becomes that he could end up at the Emirates.
