Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta really likes Wolves-bound Matheus Cunha - journalist
The Gunners are in a tricky situation at the moment. Gabriel Jesus’ injury has left them with just Eddie Nketiah up top, and many fans and pundits are urging Arteta and Edu to bring in a replacement.
That could still happen, but it doesn’t look like it’ll be Cunha.
Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta really likes Matheus Cunha
Arsenal are currently on top of the Premier League table, five points clear of Manchester City.
Nobody really expected the Gunners to be where they are at this point, but Arteta has done a remarkable job to get them there, and his summer signing, Jesus, has been integral.
However, with the Brazilian now set to be on the sidelines for about three months, Arsenal may need to dip into the transfer market to sign a replacement.
Laurens has revealed that Arteta is a big fan of Cunha, who has been branded as an ‘extraordinary’ player.
Speaking of Arsenal’s plans for January, the journalist said on ESPN FC: “It’s going to be interesting to see. They have already in place, you would think, a few names, especially in the striker role or certainly like a versatile forward who can play wide when Gabriel Jesus comes back, can (also) play centrally.
“Matheus Cunha, for example, is someone that Mikel Arteta likes for a lot of reasons.
“He would fit quite well in what Arsenal are trying to do. And when Jesus comes back, I don’t think Cunha, who is really a sub/replacement at Atletico Madrid, will mind too much about being in a similar role at Arsenal, fighting for a place in the starting lineup but knowing that ahead of him, there’s a guy better than him.”
Cunha is reportedly about to join Wolves
The January transfer window is still over 10 days away, and it doesn’t look like Arsenal have made a move to sign a new striker to replace Jesus yet. If they’re thinking of Cunha, they may be a bit too late now.
Fabrizio Romano revealed yesterday that the Brazilian attacker’s transfer to Wolves is all but done.
“Matheus Cunha to Wolves, here we go! Full verbal agreement reached between clubs with Atléti and also on personal terms. It’s a loan with obligation to buy clause, around €40/50m. Medicals being scheduled while all the documents will be prepared in the next days,” he tweeted yesterday.
