Antonio Conte says Tottenham stars Ryan Sessegnon and Dejan Kulusevski deserve to play more
The North Londoners are one of just two teams in the Premier League yet to lose a game this season. Even though their performances haven’t been great, they’ve been getting the results, and Conte deserves a lot of credit for that.
Antonio Conte says Ryan Sessegnon and Dejan Kulusevski deserve to play more
Tottenham have played seven games in all competitions so far this season, and Conte has remained fairly consistent with his team selection, at least for the most part.
The big change in recent games is the inclusion of Richarlison in place of Kulusevski. The Brazilian has done well, but the Swede will be disappointed to start on the bench, especially as he has been magnificent every time he has come on.
Conte admitted that Kulusevski deserves to play more, but he’s not the only one. The Italian claimed that young Sessegnon, who started the first two games of the season, deserves to be playing more too, but urged him and Kulusevski to stay patient until their time comes.
While initially speaking about Emerson, the Spurs boss said in his press conference, as quoted by Football London: “He has to continue to work to do it and at the same time you know that we also have Ivan Perisic who can play on the right or left and Sessegnon, he is fit and he’s in a good moment of form.
“For sure, maybe he’s (Sessegnon) one of the players that, in this moment, deserves to play, like Deki (Kulusevski).
“But, we’ll do it with the right time and the right patience, to try to do the best for our team.”
It really is tough for Conte to pick his side at the moment, but this is definitely a headache he’d prefer.
Perisic has nailed down the left wing-back position for himself, and rightly so. He’s one of the best in the world in that role, and he has been absolutely incredible for Spurs since he joined the club. That, unfortunately, has reduced Sessegnon’s minutes.
On the opposite side of the pitch, the selection dilemma between Kulusevski and Richarlison is a lot more difficult. The Brazilian has done well when he has played, but Spurs look so much more dangerous when the Swede is on the pitch – as we’ve seen in each of the last three games.
Conte’s right, both Sessegnon and Kulusevski deserve to play more. It will be interesting to see if either player will get the nod from the start against Leicester tomorrow.
