Ange Postecoglou names the one Tottenham player who’s ‘just outstanding’ in training

Tottenham Hotspur manager Ange Postecoglou has shed light on how Emerson Royal has been in training recently.

Spurs are having a very good season so far. They look a completely different side compared to last year, and the atmosphere around the club is magnificent too. Postecoglou has claimed that players like Emerson are the reason why the standard is so high at Tottenham now.

Ange Postecoglou says Emerson Royal has been outstanding in Tottenham training

Tottenham signed Emerson Royal from Barcelona back in 2021.

There was a lot of hype around the Brazilian when he came in. He had a brilliant time in La Liga during his spell at Real Betis, and many expected him to become a star at Spurs.

However, Emerson had two really difficult seasons at Tottenham. Yes, he showed flashes of his brilliance, but he struggled for consistency and made plenty of mistakes.

Pedro Porro has been the first-choice right-back for Spurs under Ange Postecoglou this season. Emerson has started just once this year – that came in the FA Cup win over Burnley.

It would be easy for a player to sulk behind the scenes when he’s no longer a regular starter but Emerson has been the complete opposite in training, says Postecoglou.

The Aussie said, as per Football London: “I see it on a daily basis, others don’t, but if you watch Emerson Royal train every day, you’d think he plays every game.

“He’s just outstanding with his attitude and demeanour around the place. There’s no time for anyone to feel down. When you see a guy like Emerson, and we’ve got a few in that boat this year like Fraser [Forster] or Ben [Davies], they train so hard every day, always have the greatest disposition in terms of their demeanour, it doesn’t give anyone else an excuse to not feel up for it.

“Those are the kind of things that make a difference to your dressing room, as well as your leaders. If you’re going through a tough time or maybe you’re battling with a few things, you see these kind of people, your leaders and others who just lift you up.”

Emerson has improved under Postecoglou

There were a lot of calls for Emerson to be sold by Tottenham after a difficult couple of years.

Jamie O’Hara went as far as calling him a ‘liability’ and even claimed he would ‘give you £5 million to get rid’ of Emerson last season.

Since Ange Postecoglou’s arrival, however, Emerson has looked so much better. He has been brilliant in recent weeks, and Spurs even rejected an offer from Saudi Arabia to sell him last month.

Emerson may not be a regular starter at Tottenham, but it’s great for Spurs fans to see how good he has been on and off the pitch recently.
